In 2011-12, AID San Diego assisted Vani Niketan School in Netala, Uttarakhand to build a retaining wall for a playground and concrete steps to climb up to the school, which is on a hill. The heavy rains in this mountainous area wash out the playground areas bringing in mud and also causing mud slides. It was always a little dangerous for small children to come up to the school. The construction work was completed satisfactorily and children in the school are now going to school and playing safely. This retaining wall and other similar preventive construction prevented any major damage to the school during the recent severe floods.
